Types of Electrical Noise and the Role of the Voltaggio

High frequency, low current spikes/dips - caused by equiment that drain small bursts of current at high frequencies such as the ignition system, fuel injectors, blower speed controllers, etc. These spikes account for the majority of the noise that affects the car's sensors' accuracy and electronic systems. They can also affect spark performance. The Voltaggio eliminates MOST of these spikes by utilizing ultra-low ESR capacitors that can charge and discharge at high-frequencies effectively (up to 100 KHz).     Static spikes - caused by static electricity which accumulates in various parts of the car and transferred unto the electrical system. Normally they are easily absorbed by the metals in the main voltage bus, but the Voltaggio elimates whatever residual that is present by allowing the ultra-low ESR capacitors to take in the static potential.

High current, sustained dip - caused by activation of high current equipment like headlamps, compressor swithes, high wattage woofer, etc. The alternator will adjust output to match the consumption, albeit in a delayed manner. The dip persists, usally for about one half of a second. The Voltaggio does NOT reduce spikes such as these. Can only be rectiffied by high capacity condensers (1-5 Farads).     High current, transient dip - caused by activation of high-drain equipment which draws current in short bursts such as automatic transmission solenoids, certain relays, etc. The voltaggio will help reduce but NOT completely eliminate such dips.


The above is a simplified depiction of the types of electrical noise in a car. In an actual car, the various types of spikes/dips overlap each other to form a messy noise pattern comprising of distortions of various frequencies. The use of ultra low ESR capacitor is necessary to effectively absorb these high-frequency noise with odd patterns.

Due to the car battery's high internal impedance and chemistry, it is unable to absorb or compensate quickly enough for these spike/dips although it is able to churn out a very high current. The battery is particularly bad at filtering the first, second and fourth type of spikes in the above diagram. The Voltaggio's role is therefore to help the battery do what it is unable to do, by working in synergy with it.
